Ginebra’s BOTEful Palawan breaks records with 70,000 bottles retrieved

Malasakit for the planet, one bottle at a time

Ginebra San Miguel Inc. (GSMI), producer of the world’s largest-selling gin, continues to champion environmental sustainability through its bottle retrieval initiative, BOTEful Philippines, which achieved a milestone in Palawan.

Launched in September 2025 across the municipalities of Brooke’s Point and Narra, BOTEful Palawan has since grown into a sustained, community-driven effort. Over a six-month period, 21 participating barangays independently continued the program, collectively retrieving almost 70,000 bottles—a remarkable achievement that highlights the power of grassroots action. Barangay Tubtub led the effort, contributing 11,489 bottles.

To put this into perspective, 70,000 bottles lined up side-by-side could fill an entire basketball court—an impactful visual of how small, consistent actions can lead to significant environmental gains.

BOTEful Palawan is a collaborative initiative in partnership with the Office of Palawan 2nd District Representative Jose C. Alvarez, with support from the San Miguel Corporation Government Affairs and Advocacy Group (GAAG), and active participation from local barangays. The program highlights how strong partnerships between the private sector, government, and communities can drive meaningful and lasting change.

To recognize the dedication of participating barangays, GSMI, SMC GAAG, and the San Miguel Foundation awarded tokens of appreciation last March 24, 2026 during the culmination event, which included JBL speakers and flat-screen TVs. These incentives not only rewarded collective effort but also strengthened community spirit and encouraged continued participation in environmental initiatives.

The San Miguel Foundation gave a flat-screen TV and speaker to representatives from Barangay Tubtub in Palawan, for being the barangay with the most contribution in the BOTEful Palawan bottle retrieval.

Growing Malasakit Movement

Since its launch in Aparri in 2017, BOTEful Philippines has evolved from a simple bottle retrieval project into a nationwide grassroots movement promoting recycling and environmental responsibility. By linking companies, LGUs, and communities, the program promotes a shared mission of reducing waste and protecting the environment.

For Palawan—widely regarded as the Philippines’ “last ecological frontier”—such efforts are especially vital. The success of BOTEful Palawan sends a strong message: protecting the environment is a shared responsibility, and every individual action counts.

Christopher ‘Payqing’ Magbanua, Senior Staff from the Office of Congressman Alvarez, emphasized this collective responsibility, noting that safeguarding Palawan’s natural resources requires the active participation of all sectors.

The involvement of barangay captains and local leaders from Brooke’s Point and Narra further reinforced this commitment. Their leadership demonstrated that when communities unite with purpose, sustainability becomes achievable.

GSMI’s BOTEful Philippines project, launched in 2017, has helped prevent over 240,000 bottles from becoming environmental waste.

Incentives Inspire Action

A key factor behind the program’s success is its engaging and inclusive approach. During the culminating activity held in the municipality of Brooke’s Point, each bottle earned points for the participants, which they exchanged for canned goods and other food products.

This system transformed BOTEful Palawan into a vibrant, community-centered event, with a festive atmosphere.

GSMI Logistics Manager Rey Quinto explained this community spirit, emphasizing that “a thousand bottles cannot be completed without the first bottle,” noting how every contribution matters.

Meanwhile, Business Affairs and Communications Manager Nadia Abcede underscored the broader impact of the initiative. She noted that BOTEful Philippines supports the government’s policy on solid waste management by promoting recycling at the grassroots level and cultivating a culture of malasakit among communities.

To date, BOTEful Philippines has collected and recycled more than 240,000 bottles nationwide, each one diverted from landfills, waterways, and oceans.

As GSMI and its partners continue to expand BOTEful initiatives across the country, one message remains clear: real change begins with a single step—or in this case, with one bottle.

All second-hand bottles are carefully screened and counted before being accepted for exchange.
