Value Chain

MOLASSES SOURCING & STORAGE

Each GSMI product begins with the sourcing of raw material for alcohol production. Molasses undergoes quality inspection and is stored at Distileria Bago, Inc. (the only distillery plant of GSMI, and one of the biggest distilleries in Asia).

ALCOHOL PRODUCTION & STORAGE

Fermentation

During alcohol production, molasses undergoes fermentation transforming the sugars into fermented beer containing ethyl alcohol and raw CO2. Raw CO2 is recovered, purified, and liquefied for selling to beverage manufacturers and traders.

Wastewater undergoes pre-treatment and anaerobic treatment processes to produce biogas for in-house fuel generation. Some of the wastewater from anaerobic treatment is fortified into liquid fertilizer, while the remainder goes straight to the aerobic and post treatment processes.

Distillation

Fermented beer then goes through distillation where it is heated and cooled to produce ethyl alcohol. Depending on the requirement, DBI is capable to produce fine alcohol, extra neutral alcohol and rum alcohol. Technical alcohol, a byproduct with a different profile, is sold to other manufacturers.

BOTTLE SOURCING & LIQUOR PACKAGING

Brand new bottles are transported to our bottling plants, along with the second-hand bottles which are retrieved and washed by third-party suppliers.

The distilled alcohol from DBI are shipped to bottling plants, then blended

with other ingredients and flavors. This is conveyed through pipelines to our bottle-filling machines. After filling, the liquor products are tightly crowned or capped, sealed, labeled and coded.

Finished products are then packed into cartons and palletized, before storage or delivery. Our line operators monitor

quality parameters through every process step, then further validation is conducted by our quality assurance personnel, to ensure GSMI quality standards are met.

PRODUCT DELIVERY AND SELLING

Our products are transported from the bottling facilities by truckers or haulers to our warehouses, dealers and key accounts, and are eventually delivered by our longtime trade partners to various channels such as retailers, groceries, supermarket chains, convenience stores and on-premise outlets.

To reach and better serve our end-consumers, we currently have 100 dealer sites, that manage the f GSMI distribution and sale of products, and 17 strategically located sales offices catering to around 158,000 outlets spread across the archipelago.

Circular Economy

One of the byproducts in molasses fermentation is carbon dioxide (CO2). CO2 is recovered, purified and liquefied, then supplied to beverage manufacturers who produce carbonated drinks.

Technical alcohol is one of the byproducts of Distilling Alcohol (with different profile). It is being collected and sell it to manufacturers who further process it for other products.

Molasses undergoes fermentation converting sugars into Fermented beer containing ethyl alcohol and raw CO2. Fermented beer then goes through distillation where volatile component is heated and cooled to produce ethyl alcohol.

The distillery is located at Bago City, Negros Occidental.

Our major product from Fermentation of molasses and being extracted from Distillation process. This is used in the production of our liquor products.

The distilled alcohol from our Distillery is shipped to our 5 bottling plants where they are blended and bottled, ensuring GSMI quality standards are met. Finished products are then packed for storage and delivery.

Our Bottling plants:
  1. Cabuyao Plant, Laguna
  2. Sta. Barbara Plant, Pangasinan
  3. Mandaue Plant, Cebu
  4. Cauayan Plant, Isabela
  5. Ligao Plant, Albay

Along with brand new bottles directly delivered to our bottling plants, GSMI mindfully makes use of secondhand bottles which are retrieved and meticulously washed by third party suppliers and  delivered back to our bottling facility.

A thick, dark, and sugar rich byproduct of refined sugar production. Once considered as waste product of sugar production, molasses is a highly touted renewable resource that is used for different products today.

Waste water undergoes pre-treatment and anaerobic treatment process to produce Biogas for in-house energy generation which displaced bunker
fuel consumption.

Wastewater undergoes treatment, both Anaerobic and aerobic process to comply with regulatory standard prior to disposal.

Mineral rich treated wastewater from our Distillery is further processed and fortified with additional nutrients to become liquid fertilizer which are used by sugarcane farmers to optimize their crop yields.

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum). Its stout stalks are rich in sucrose, a disaccharide sugar which accumulates in the stalk internodes. It is cultivated for the production of sugar, ethanol, and other products.

Doing Our Part Toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

GSMI supports SMC group’s Water for All initiative 50×2025, which aims to reduce water consumption across the group by 50% by 2025. Currently, we achieved a 40% reduction in our water program initiatives. We are also committed to comply with Clean water Act and ensuring that our water discharges are lower than the set limits.

GSMI undertakes tree planting activities in collaboration with Local Government Units and has continued to preserve its mangrove reforestation project, which commenced in mid-1990’s and has expanded to 14 hectares.

GSMI is predominantly male workforce because of the nature of its business. However, the company strongly upholds equal opportunities for all its employees.

Environmental stewardship

As advocates for responsible environmental practices, we continue to transform our business practices in order to align with sustainability principles, through the proactive reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions, the conservation of natural resources, and the implementation of responsible waste management strategies. By embracing these challenges, our ongoing efforts are focused on integrating sustainable practices to reduced our environmental footprint and creating a positive impact.

Transforming Organic Waste into Clean Energy

Biogas production is becoming one of the most promising solutions to address both waste management and sustainable energy. By harnessing the power of organic waste, biogas systems convert raw materials into renewable energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels. In our Distillery, biogas production is part of our circular economy model. This process closes the loop in waste management, transforming what would otherwise be a pollutant into a valuable resource.

Moving toward Plastic waste reduction

Ginebra San Miguel has made significant progress in integrating sustainability into the core of its operations, progressively adopting more environmentally responsible practices in product design. As of March 2025, plastic pourers were eliminated from our product portfolio, which were previously integrated in our GSM Blue and Primera Light Brandy. The initiative on plastic reduction started last 2021 when our Ginebra San Miguel Hari transitioned from plastic cap to aluminum cap. Last 2024 , we made another milestone when we reduced the length and thickness of the plastic “Seal -O-Band”in our Chinese wine, Vino Kulafu, which reduced our 2024 plastic footprint by 111.5 metric tons. We will continue to explore innovative solutions to reduce plastic waste and promote responsible packaging across our product lines without compromising quality.

Social Engagement

‘Malasakit’ lies at the core of all our initiatives, guiding us to act with care and responsibility to positively impact our employees, business partners, and the communities where we operate. As a socially responsible company, we prioritize social sustainability in every aspect of our business. We actively listen to the concerns of our stakeholders, working to address them and drive positive change in the areas where we can. Our efforts focus on fostering inclusivity, reducing inequality, ensuring long- term well-being, and upholding social justice.

Beyond Workplace – Making a difference through volunteerism

One powerful way to build a strong sense of community and create meaningful social impact is through employee volunteerism. This initiative not only supports the local communities where our employees serve but also enhances overall job satisfaction, strengthens team cohesion, and reinforces our commitment to a culture of ‘Malasakit’. As we continue aligning our business objectives with social responsibility, volunteering empowers our employees to dedicate their time and energy to meaningful causes. It also allows them to build relationships and experience a deeper sense of purpose. This sense of gratitude has a ripple effect—positively influencing both our workplace culture and the broader community.

BOTEful Philippines

BOTEful Ginebra, the company’s bottle retrieval program, empowers employees to become good stewards of the environment by letting them directly contribute to a cleaner future with less waste. Through this program, employees are encouraged to collect consumed Ginebra bottles from their homes for recycling. This benefits not just the environment but also employees, helping them clean their homes by turning scattered bottles into recyclable materials.

The program proved to be an effective way to encourage recycling among the workforce, as thousands of employees in 2023 participated in the activations at the Division Office, Sta. Barbara plant, and Distileria Bago Inc., resulting in 32,000 total retrieved bottles. This represents 32,000 potential pieces of waste prevented from harming the environment – a number that will only continue to grow as the program goes on.

Aside from fostering a sense of shared environmental responsibility, the program also boosts company pride in its employees, making them feel proud to be a part of a company that prioritizes sustainability in its operations.

TESDA
Bar Academy

Ginebra San Miguel Bar Academy, a bartending school built through an over ten-year partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), has been a catalyst for personal growth and transformation in the lives of Filipino youths. It has provided them with world-class bartending and flairtending education and access to state-of-the-art facilities, empowering them to pursue their dreams and excel in the industry.

Sustainability at a Glance

Data as of 2024

For 2024, we consumed 1.5 million GJ of energy. This 7% increase was brought about by higher production volumes. While this was the case, our renewable energy usage increased by 14% across our facilities as biogas generation improved as well as the Renewable Energy (RE) mix from power supplied at our distillery. Combined with other energy reduction initiatives, our Greenhouse Gasses (GHG) emissions reduced by 4% against last year.

The increase in water withdrawal, water consumption and water discharge was generally driven by higher production volume. The water reused and recycled can be attributed to various water recovery programs implemented at each facility.

Waste segregation was implemented in each facility. Solid waste were diverted through reused, recycled and other recovery operations such as composting. We recognize the importance of waste management in our operations, and we continue to pursue initiatives to reduce the waste we generate
The percentage of renewable materials decreased compared last year, however, total materials used increased by 6% due to higher production volume. Most of our renewable materials were raw materials which were used on production of our products, which includes alcohol, sugar, cartons, labels, molasses and second-hand bottles.

Training and development plays a vital role in our employees growth. We continue to strengthen our learning programs through our various GSMI Training schools, for a holistic development of our employees, and we continue to be flexible in ensuring that learning gaps are effectively managed to strengthen and cultivate a competent and resilient workforce.
